BCN locations
SANT GERVASI-GALVANY. Originally a market and a park.
This neighborhood is located at the eastern end of the old village of Sant Gervasi de Cassoles, between Avinguda Diagonal and Ronda del Mig. The current name was taken from the names of new urban developments that were beginning to occupy this area during the second half of the 19th century, such as Camp de les Figueres, Turó de Modolell, and Camp d'en Galvany.
The only name that still remains is Camp d'en Galvany, a plot of land where the owner, Josep Castelló i Galvany, developed in 1886. The name became popular when it was used to name the current municipal market.
This neighborhood is mainly residential with commercial activity and an important tertiary sector near Avinguda Diagonal and C/ Muntaner.
The former railway that connected the municipalities of Sarrià and Barcelona, inaugurated in 1868, ran along what is now Avinguda Vía Augusta. The railway was covered between 1925 and 1929 and now corresponds to the FGC railway which is underground.
The predominant type of building in this neighborhood is the closed block of flats, but on both sides of Vía Augusta, the model of isolated medium-rise blocks is repeated. This is one of the most exclusive areas of Barcelona.
